judgement culture and it's effects

 hi guys!

something that has really been on my mind for a while now, but especially since starting my blog, is how prominent judgement culture has truly become, and how problematic it has become.

this issue has risen in my mind now especially, because i've begun to realize how crucial it is for young people to have spaces to express themselves. personally, i live in an extremely small town with kids who honestly aren't accepting of many things. a "dare to be different" vibe, where if you're deemed as weird, it's basically social downfall.

now of course, we can all say being popular means nothing (and i agree), or that "social status" is stupid, but at the end of the day, we all want to be liked for who we are. in places where you have to give up your individuality in order to feel "normal", you're forced to sacrifice huge parts of yourself.

young people as a whole are terrified of being different from one another because we have manipulated the word "different" to instead mean "weird" or "disliked".

this also happens to huge degrees online as a result of anonymity given to people who abuse it. it has become so easy and mindless to sit behind screens and comment nasty things on peoples videos. it has become so easy, in fact, that it is more difficult to post yourself than to put down others who mustered up that courage that you maybe couldn't.

judgement coming from all angles leads to individuals feeling a need to suppress their uniqueness. this removes the ability to connect with others who may have similar interests, increases sadness and anxiety overall, and makes it impossible to feel fully whole without hiding parts of themselves that they deem "unsafe" to show off.

someone dressing differently than you does not make them weird. a girl being perceived as skinny in a tiktok doesn't mean you get to diagnose her with an disorder. someone being interested in media you've never heard of is not a gateway to make fun of them, but instead an opportunity to ask questions and open yourself up to worlds of knowledge.

i hope that it becomes normalized to think before you say something judgmental, even if the repercussions of your actions are not immediately apparent. that could have been the one time someone felt confident in their own skin.

you may not agree with everyone's interests. you may not understand why someone does what they do or why they do it, but in a world where everyone is unsure of if they will be accepted or not, be that one understanding soul.
